Pea Gravel: Size, Uses, and Cost Per Ton (2026)

Pea gravel is small, naturally rounded stone screened to 1/4 to 3/8 inch and washed clean. It costs $36 to $62 per ton in 2026, weighs 1.3 to 1.45 tons per cubic yard, and is the most popular gravel for patios, walkways, play areas, and garden beds because it is smooth underfoot and comes in warm mixed colors. The rounded shape is also its main drawback: the pieces do not lock together, so pea gravel shifts, spreads, and needs edging.

Where Pea Gravel Comes From

Pea gravel is dredged or dug from river beds, gravel pits, and glacial deposits, then washed and screened. Water tumbled the stones round over thousands of years. Crushed stone in the same size range, like #8 gravel or #89 stone, is angular and behaves differently even though the sizes match. If a supplier offers "pea gravel" that is gray and sharp, it is crushed, and it will pack better and feel rougher.

What Pea Gravel Is Used For

• Patios. Two to 3 inches over compacted base, inside rigid edging. Comfortable to sit on, easy to rake, cheap to install.
• Walkways. Two inches deep with edging on both sides. Pleasant to walk on, crunchy, and it stays cooler than pavers in the sun.
• Play areas. Cushions falls and drains fast. Standard depth is 9 to 12 inches under swings and climbers, which is a lot of gravel.
• Garden beds and ground cover. Two inches over fabric suppresses weeds and holds moisture in the soil.
• Dog runs. Drains well and is gentle on paws.
• Drainage around downspouts and in dry creek beds. Works for light drainage, though #57 moves more water.
• Between pavers and stepping stones. Fills joints with a soft look.
• Under decks and around foundations. Keeps mud down and looks tidy.

How Pea Gravel Behaves

Rounded stones roll. A pea gravel patio feels like walking on a dry creek bed: firm enough, but your feet sink a little and the surface never packs. Compaction is about 5 percent, so what you spread is what you get. Under tires it is worse. Cars push pea gravel into ruts and spray it into the lawn, which is why it is a poor driveway surface unless it sits in a plastic stabilizing grid. Wheelbarrows and strollers need a firm push. Snow shoveling picks up the top layer.

On the plus side, it drains like a sieve, never gets muddy, does not track dust indoors, and looks good next to plants. In the shade it can grow moss, which many people like.

Installing Pea Gravel

Excavate 3 to 4 inches, install edging (steel, aluminum, paver, or timber; rigid edging is not optional with pea gravel), compact the soil, lay landscape fabric to keep the gravel from mixing into the dirt, and spread 2 to 3 inches. For a patio that has to hold chairs without wobbling, put 2 to 3 inches of compacted crusher run or stone dust under 1.5 inches of pea gravel. Keep pea gravel to 2 inches on paths; deeper than that and it feels like walking in sand.

What Pea Gravel Costs

Bulk pea gravel runs $36 to $62 per ton or $50 to $86 per cubic yard. One ton covers about 100 square feet at 2 inches and 65 square feet at 3 inches. A 10 x 20 ft patio at 2 inches needs about 2 tons, $72 to $124 in gravel plus delivery or two pickup trips. A 10-ton truckload runs $360 to $620 before delivery. Bagged pea gravel at $4 to $6 per half-cubic-foot bag is fine for a few square feet of planter or a small path, and 5 to 8 times the bulk price for anything bigger. Colored or single-shade pea gravel (all white, all black, Mexican beach pebble) costs 2 to 4 times more.

What to Avoid

Skip pea gravel as a driveway surface without a grid. Skip it on any slope over about 5 percent, where it walks downhill with every rain. Skip it under pavers, where it will never stop shifting. Skip it as a French drain stone; use #57. And do not install it without edging. The gravel will be in the lawn and the mower will be throwing it within a season.
