Crusher Run: Size, Uses, and Cost Per Ton (2026)

Crusher run is crushed stone with the rock dust left in, sold as 3/4 inch minus or 1.5 inch minus. It costs $14 to $38 per ton in 2026, weighs 1.5 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard, and packs into a surface hard enough to drive on year after year. It is the standard base under roads, driveways, parking lots, and patios, and the best single-layer material for a gravel driveway. In the Southeast it is called crush and run. Why Crusher Run Packs So Hard

A pile of clean #57 stone is about 35 percent air. Crusher run fills that air with smaller stone, sand, and dust. When you wet it and run a plate compactor or a loaded truck over it, the fines lock the larger pieces in place and the whole layer knits together. Compaction is about 15 percent, so a 6-inch loose layer ends up about 5 inches. The finished surface sheds rain, holds tires without rutting, and can be graded smooth with a box blade. Given a few months of traffic, a crusher run driveway feels closer to pavement than to gravel.

The trade-off is drainage. Water runs off crusher run instead of through it. That is fine on a crowned driveway with somewhere for water to go. It is the wrong choice inside a French drain or behind a retaining wall.

What Crusher Run Is Used For

• Gravel driveways. Four to 6 inches on firm ground, compacted in two lifts, makes a complete driveway with no other layers. On soft clay, put 4 inches of #4 stone under it.
• Parking lots and pads. The go-to surface for gravel parking, RV pads, and equipment yards. Six inches for cars, 8 to 12 inches in two layers for trucks.
• Road base. Under asphalt and concrete roads, crusher run is the structural layer that carries the load.
• Paver and patio base. Four inches of compacted crusher run under 1 inch of sand or stone dust is the standard paver base.
• Shed and hot tub pads. Compacts flat and stays flat.
• Walkways. Packs into a firm path, though it is dusty when dry and a bit muddy when wet. Decomposed granite or #89 stone is nicer underfoot.
• Filling potholes and ruts. The fines make it bind to the old surface instead of rolling out.

3/4 Minus Versus 1.5 Minus

Most quarries sell two sizes. 3/4 inch minus is finer and gives a smoother finished surface, so it is the pick for driveway tops, paths, and paver base. 1.5 inch minus has bigger top-size stone, spreads loads better, and is the pick for the bottom of a thick driveway or a truck lot. Some quarries call the coarser one "#4 down" or "crusher run base" and the finer one "#57 down" or "crusher run surface."

Installing Crusher Run

Grade the subsoil with a slight crown or a 2 percent slope so water leaves. Lay geotextile fabric if the soil is clay. Spread crusher run in 3-inch lifts, wet each lift lightly with a hose, and compact it with a plate compactor (rent one for about $90 a day) or drive a loaded truck back and forth. Keep going until the surface stops moving. A driveway done this way needs a fresh inch on top every 2 to 3 years and almost no other maintenance.

What Crusher Run Costs

At $14 to $38 per ton it is among the cheapest materials a quarry sells. Because it is dense, a ton covers less area than a ton of #57: about 55 square feet at 4 inches. What to Avoid

Do not use crusher run for drainage, inside a French drain, around drain pipe, or behind a retaining wall. Do not use it as a play area surface or in garden beds, where the fines turn to a crust. Do not spread it in one thick lift; it will not compact past the top 3 inches. And do not expect a dust-free surface in dry weather.
